P. acnes is a lot easier to say that Propionibacterium acnes…. but be that as it may, Propionibacterium acnes is a bacterium that we know contributes to the onset of acne. Okay… now that is out of the way, let’s stick to calling it P. acnes!
P. acnes is a bacteria that grows and multiplies slowly and can thrive with or without oxygen. This bacterium is found on the skin and performs an important role in preventing other types of bacteria from invading and attacking the skin, but in order to survive P. acnes need our sweat and sebum (an oily secretion from the sebaceous glands). However, if we overproduce sebum, the P. acnes living on and in our skin actually turn against us and cause acne.
When our skin’s pores become blocked and sebum is overproduced, P. acnes overgrow and produce certain chemicals which destroy the supporting walls of the pores in our skin. When the pores rupture it enables bacteria to enter the skin and cause an infection, whereby an acne lesion is formed.
