Acne and Depression


Acne and DepressionOftentimes we can feel negative about our physical appearance, particularly if in the midst of an acne breakout. For the majority of acne sufferers though this state of being low passes relatively quickly and does not develop into a full blown emotional problem. However, for some unfortunate people their acne can become overwhelming and seem to be an unsurmountable problem, which can  lead to depression. If this happens it is extremely important that the signsand symptoms of depression are recognized and managed properly and quickly.

General Symptoms of Depression:

  • Lethargy
  • Crying (seemingly without reason)
  • Mood swings
  • No appetite
  • Unexplained fatigue or lethargy
  • Behavioral problems
  • Extreme negativity and feelings or low worth

Depressed teenagers with acne may show signs of social withdrawal such as shutting themselves away in their bedroom or avoiding social interaction with their peer group. They may also begin to under perform at school.

Managing Depression Caused by Acne

Regardless of whether acne is the cause or not, depression needs to be identified and managed as early as possible. If you have any suspicion that you are depressed you should speak to your doctor at the earliest convenience.

Acne and Depression - Treatment

Although not curable acne can absolutely be controlled through topical acne preparations and/or prescription drugs. Depression too can be treated quite quickly and effectively in the majority of cases. In both cases your doctor should be able to provide immeasurable help.

If acne/depression is significantly affecting the quality of your life your doctor is the best person to talk to. You should make your doctor understand how your acne is making you feel so that he or she fully understands how unhappy you are.
